The First Week

Ever since we brought our baby home, Jerry has kept a daily diary to our son. So this post is taken from that.

November 02, 2009 (Day 0)
Well today is the day. The C-Section is scheduled for 8:00AM. We arrived at the hospital at 6:00 AM hoping for some progression on the natural labor. However, we found out that it would not be possible so we proceeded with the C-Section. The nurses prepared your mommy and I got dressed in my scrubs. It was all very exciting and nerve wracking. As I waited to be called into the room, I was excited to meet you. I was finally called in to the room and sat next to your mommy's head. We were both excited. The moment that we heard your cry and then saw you was a moment that changed our lives. While mommy and me loved each other, we had no idea how much love we could have for you. That cry swelled our hearts and filled our souls. You became the most precious and most important thing in our lives. Well after that the nurses and doctors cleaned you up and fixed mommy up. I got to hold you and you never left our sight from that moment on. Afterwards, we found out that there was an issue in you being born naturally, one being that you had wrapped yourself up in the umbilical cord and the other being a fibroid on mommy that may have been keeping you up. So God knew best and that is why we placed our trust in Him. The rest of that day was consumed with us looking and admiring you. Everyone says that you are a beautiful baby and we know you are the most beautiful baby. After you were born, my sister Carol was there to greet you. She was the first person besides the doctors, your daddy, and your mommy to hold you.

November 03 - 04, 2009 (Days 1-2)
These days all ran together for us. The constant checking on mommy and you by the nurses. By the way, we kept you in the room with us because we waited so long for you that we were never going to let you out of our sight.

Also, you required hourly feedings that we were grateful for doing. The only problem was that not all of mommy's milk had come in and we were concerned that you were not getting enough food. These led to some very worried and stressful parents.

Then the doctors said that you were jaundiced. The yellow started in your forehead, then progressed to your nose, cheeks, and ears. You even had a little bit on your upper chest.

We did not know if you were getting enough colostrum/milk. This caused mommy to be stressed about her milk production. Your mommy refused to take the pain meds even though the nurses encouraged her to push the little button to her IV. She feared that may have something to do with her milk production.

We also did not like the fact that the nurses kept checking you and we were always afraid that they may want to take you out of the room. We were afraid that they wanted to put you in the nursery to keep an eye on your jaundice. The night before we were discharged, your mommy had a mini-breakdown. You were crying and we didn't know what was wrong. She was so worried that the band around your ankle was too tight and chafing you. She told the nurse to remove it but hospital policy prevented her from removing it. Another nurse came to take your mommy's blood pressure and saw she was very upset so she said she would come back later. We almost checked ourselves out that evening.

November 5, 2009 (Day 3)
Your mommy's doctor agreed to discharge us all to go home. But we did have to keep an eye on mommy as one concern for her was that after you were born her blood pressure went up. That afternoon we could all relax (somewhat) because you were home safe and sound. We spent the rest of the day staring at you.

November 06, 2009 (Day 4)
Our first full day with just the three of us. We were all so tired. Daddy took a nap with you while mommy was keeping the house in order.

Today was also the day your mommy's milk started to come in. We were so happy because we thought we would have to feed you formula. We just spent the day feeding you and hoping for a poopy diaper. That was the only way we knew you would be gaining weight and clearing the jaundice.

November 07, 2009 (Day 5)
You had a doctor visit with Dr. Wolff and your Aunt Sofia. The neonatologist at the hospital said that we should see a pediatrician as soon as possible to check your weight (you had lost 10% of your birth weight) and jaundice. Dr. Wolff said that we should not be worried and if need be supplement your feedings with formula. He also wanted to talk about circumcision. We had delayed that at the hospital because we did not want you to go through that until you began eating well. We still did not feel committed to the idea of having you circumcised and would not give a definite answer. However, later that day, one worry was relieved - you had what we affectionately call a "blow out". That is, you had a poop. We were so pleased that you had finally pooped because that meant that you were finally passing the bilirubin and that the jaundice was on its way to being cleared up. We have been keeping track of all your inputs and outputs (how long you breast feed and when you urinated and defecated). It was the best poop we had ever seen. With that we felt that you did not need the formula and that you would be able to rely on your mother's milk.

November 08, 2009 (Day 6)
The bibs that you have are too big for you right now. So we had to change your clothes several times a day because you had a lot of wet burps. As a result, we're constantly doing laundry. We don't mind though, as long as you're comfortable.

Today was a day filled with feedings and more poops. We were very proud parents.

We took you outside for a couple of minutes because the weather was so nice.

November 09, 2009 (Day 7)
We finally made a decision today on the circumcision. We opted not to have you circumcised. We researched, prayed, and finally decided that there was no benefit for being circumcised. Plus we did not want to hurt you or cause you to have any problems with your feeding schedule so that the jaundice could get cleared up. It is just a simple matter of cleanliness so we opted for no circumcision.
